Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado en Cedros

by GoodFellasCigars

Wrapper: Ecuador Sumatra

Filler: Dominican, Honduran, Nicaraguan

Binder: Connecticut

Country: Dominican Republic

The Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado en Cedros is an excellent cigar for being a somewhat bargain smoke. It has an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper, a Connecticut binder and Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Honduran fillers. The thick veins contributed to the rugged look of this medium-bodied smoke. It also had a good firm pack that didn’t inhibit the draw at all. The initial draw was creamy with a raisin sweetness and a cedar spice that complimented it without overpowering the flavor and a cedar aroma was present as well. When going through the first third the flavor experience was a subtle cedar spice with a chocolate sweetness that was milk to dark chocolate and a note of walnut that was in the background. Continuing down the second third of the cigar there was more of a nutty flavor with the cocoa sweetness subsiding but, not gone and a balance of cedar spice was pronounced. The finish was earthy with the nutty flavor becoming more prominent and the cedar spice still remained consistent and not overwhelming. The sweetness went away and there was no harshness until the very end. The ash was firm and white and as for the burn it was pretty much perfect with maybe one touch up needed. Overall the Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado en Cedros was a pleasing smoke that had a great price that did not disappoint.

Skull and Bones: Mother of all Bombs

by GoodFellasCigars

Wrapper: Nicaragua

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua

Country: Nicaragua

The release of the Viaje Skull and Bones M.O.A.B. has arrived with an ass kickin attitude. When you pick it up it appears small and weak, but when you light this one up it becomes obvious where its name derives from. Right off the bat you pick up on an intense spice that covers your entire palate. There is a large amount of heavy smoke to create a thoroughly enjoyable experience. About a quarter of the way through you start to pick up on a note of nuttiness that stays all the way through the long finish. I began to notice an underlying sweetness along with a note of whole grain. The finish stays cool which allows you to smoke it till you burn your fingers. All in all, if you see one of these, grab it, smoke it, enjoy it and buy another. Easily the best cigar I’ve found.

Skull and Bones Weapon of Mass Destruction

by GoodFellasCigars

Wrapper: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Binder: Nicaraguan

Country: Nicaragua

Size: WMD

Our story starts out with a nuclear explosion accompanied by a mushroom cloud with the aftershock setting off an avalanche coming right for you while you are skiing on expert terrain. Oh, and did I mention that you never skied before? To even survive you have to be a world class skier. Well image all that combined into a small but cigar labeled by a red skull and bones. Well short story short beginners should not take on the Viaje Skull and Bones Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD). Just don’t do it. instead go for the San Cristobal Selección Del Sol a medium yet smooth cigar.

If you have taken the challenge to take on this insane cigar here is what to expect. This is the strongest cigar we have come across so far and we’re guessing that we will not come across another that compares for quite some time. This WMD has flavors of intense spice and tobacco with hints of black liquorish especially in the finish. The draw is good giving off a respectable amount of smoke. The ash is dark and flaky. The construction is wonderful but, a down side is the uneven burn.  The first and second third is consistent and the last third becomes slightly harsh due to the heat from the burn. Stop smoking whenever you have had enough of getting your ass kicked.

Cigar News for the Week of 3/20/11 – 3/25/11

First Cigar Factory to feature organic tobacco

Recently the House of Cigars Factory, first federally licensed factory in Texas, started making the first cigars with what they call organic tobacco that uses no pesticides and are placed in a controlled environment to preserve quality. The reason for this is the Martinez’s want to be different from other cigar bars and make their own blend. They created the Big Daddy which retails for 38 bucks which uses a blend marinated in brandy and Madagascar vanilla bean and molasses from upstate New York, and uses leafs from Colombia, Mexico Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico. Overall sounds like an interesting concept.

Maryland Cigar Tax Bill Rejected in Committee

On Monday the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee voted 12-1 to label the bill as unfavorable. This means the bill will be seen on the chamber calendar under the label of  Unfavorable Reports and so will probably be voted down.

Senate Bill 654 called for Maryland’s other tobacco products tax, if passed would it have raised taxes from 15 to 95 percent. But on a slightly the bright note the tax would top off at $3. On the not so bright side it would be an increase of 533 %. The bill would also increase the tax on little cigars and cigarettes.

Saving an Old Cigar Factory

To save the building two conditions must be met. The first is to seal the building until a restoration plan is in place. The second is an environmental valuation to determine the severity of contamination of mold and animal feces. Anyone entering the building must wear protective clothing to avoid getting ill. But, one major obstacle is obtaining funding to even have a chance to complete restoration and upkeep.
