Montecristo has become one of the most popular and iconic cigar brands in the world through out its 75 years in existence owing to many aficionados having had the pleasure of enjoying these cigars over years. Under Altadis, S.A. Montecristo is celebrating its 75th Anniversary of existence with a special limited production Montecristo 75th Anniversario. Is there any better way to celebrate one’s 75th anniversary? For the cigar lover the answer is obviously not. Lets see what the skill and heart of those 75 years have produced.
The Montecristo 75th Anniversario No.2 is a beautiful looking cigar with nearly flawless construction. But, with everything nothing lasts forever and so with this pretty little stick as it was desinted to be lit a flame. The initial draw brought smooth mix of brown sugar, maple and a terrific draw. As the first third progressed the draw remained very good and the flavor profile spiced up a bit. Light spice maple mix with slight caramelized sugar made up the flavor profile accompanied by a sweet maple syrup finish. The burn was fairly even and slightly wavy.
Going into the second third the theme of sweet maple persisted. A sweetness of caramelized sugar was prominent and was complemented very nicely with maple wood tones. The finish consisted of a light sweet maple flavor. The ash was slightly flaky. the draw remained consistently excellent. The burn was also consistent with the first third being slightly wavy.
The first and second third carried on the theme of maple wood and the last third is no different in this regard just a lot stronger. The flavor profile simplified into just spiced maple. The finish was very strong and intense that consisted of a maple caramelized sugar combination. The draw was very easy and the burn was wavy. The intensity of the Montecristo 75th Anniversario No.2 could be a bit overwhelming for some toward the end .
Over all the Montecristo 75th Anniversario No.2 was an excellent cigar. The finial third could have been a little less intense and I could have waited to smoke this cigar after a short rest in the humidor instead of taking right out of the decorative Montecristo Relief Organization Operation Hope 2011 box sealed in shrink wrap which not doing may have made the wrapper ever so slightly dry. But, I couldn’t wait and i don’t think that it took away too much from this cigar. though I think my eagerness to smoke the Montecristo 75th Anniversario No.2 was warranted.
Intended or not this cigar was a maple syrup bomb of sorts. Canada, did you conspire to make this happen? Conspiracy theories a side which I will leave to Dion Giolito; the maple and sugar tones were very enjoyable. If you are one of those people whose motto can be summed up as: no cigar is properly smoked without some kind of alcoholic beverage; then pair this cigar with a sweet spirit such as well aged Canadian whiskey like Canadian Club Classic 12 Year Old Canadian Whiskey. Canadian Club Whiskey 12 Year Old Canadian Whiskey complements the Montecristo 75th Anniversario No.2 beautifully and is less expensive than Crown Royal. So sit back relax and light this is beaut up!
