“O’ zapft is!” It is tapped! yells the Mayor of Munich after tapping the 1st keg marking the start of Oktoberfest! Oktoberfest is one of the most famous and celebrated festival in the world. The yearly festival that lasts 16 to 18 days and ends the 1st Sunday of October summons millions of beer lovers to partake in the festival of beer in Munich, Germany. This wonderful event is not just confined to Munich, an innumerable amount of people celebrate and are blessed by the Marzen-style beer that is crafted specifically for Oktoberfest.
What would be better than enjoying a Marzen-style beer with a cigar? Enjoying a Marzen-style beer with a cigar specifically blended to complement it of course! The Quesada family has heard the call and have fulfilled this need with the Quesada Oktoberfest the Über (6 x 65) and the Bavarian (5.5 x 52).
Well if you are going to celebrate Oktoberfest you might as well go all out and smoke the Quesada Oktoberfest the Über paired with your favorite Marzen-style beer. To review the Quesada Oktoberfest the Über we did exactly that, pairing the Über with Samuel Adams Octoberfest along with water to clear the palate in order to taste both the cigar by itself and with beer.
The prelight darw of the Quesada Oktoberfest the Über consisted of nutmeg, oregano, and light but noticeable red pepper and spicy ginger complex. The initial lighted draw was a foreshadowed to the pairing of beer and smoke with with nice malty flavor and subtle spice tones. A little further in flavors of roasted grains become prominent. The finish had spicy ginger tones.
The 1st third with Samuel Adams Octoberfest added to the complex of flavors of slightly bitter hops barley married with malty roasted grains of the cigar. The draw through the first third was great and the beer added a silkiness to the abundant smoke that was simply wunderbar.
The 2nd third without beer mellowed with light spice, and light roasted grain. The finish also mellowed considerably with a smooth sweet tobacco flavor.
With the Samuel Adams Octoberfest Marzen-style beer during the 2nd third the cigar smooths out the flavor profile of the beer and the maltyness really comes through. The finish was just pure malt and the draw again throughout the 2nd third was great in fact it was like a dream.
Next the final third without being complemented by beer featured a flavor profile of roasted grain with a finish of roasted grains, and light spice.
Finally, finishing out the cigar with Samuel Adams Octoberfest brought out a strong malt and strong roasted grains. The finish had heavy roasted grains and hops, followed by spice.
Overall the Quesada Oktoberfest the Über was a fantastic cigar that set out on a mission to pair with Marzen-style beer. That mission was definitely accomplished. This cigar was like a canvass for the Marzen-style beer, and even though was great on its own must be paired with Marzen-style beer to be propperly enjoyed. The Quesada Oktoberfest will and should become a tradition for anyone loves the spirit and not to mention the beer of Oktoberfest.
