Spring is finally here and so is our Cigar of the Month for April! This month we have chosen something from Room101 because we believe this is a cigar everyone has to try. It is called the Room101 One Shot One Kill (O.S.O.K) Filero.  Some of you may be wondering how does one come up with the name One Shot One Kill. The story behind this starts directly from who made this cigar which is of course Matt Booth along with collaboration from his friend, a southern California photographer, Edgar Hoill. His nickname is One Shot One Kill due to the fact he can produce amazing photos with one click of the camera. Edgar Hoill is most known for taking very moving photographs of Mexican border towns and slums in Cuba. He is also known for his clothing company as well called O.S.O.K. The One Shot One Kill was debuted at IPCPR 2011 in Las Vegas and was officially released this January in three different sizes that are all a Diadema/Perfecto mix. For the Cigar of the Month we chose the smallest of the three called the Filero.

The Look: The Room101 One Shot One Kill is not your typical cigar, it is not enclosed by cellophane or even a cedar sheath. It’s not enclosed by one protective cover but two! The outermost cover is basically a mini poster once undone. It has a decorative black and white skull on it that fits the tribal theme Matt Booth is always trying to portray in his cigar lines. The next layer of defense is a tissue like paper that’s twisted at the ends like a toostie roll. Once fully unwrapped we see the cigar’s shape which is a mix between a Perfecto and a Diadema. It closely resembles to an Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story. The band is matte black with silver along with the abraviation O.S.O.K which is a lot different than what was shown at IPCPR 2011 in Las Vegas. Also we notice on the back is a QR code that upon scanning with a devise that has a QR program or application leads to Room101’s Facebook. I love the idea of this and I could see more people in the industry begin to use this. The pack on this cigar is a little soft and it doesn’t really snap back after releasing. Maybe this will affect the burn or maybe not. There are no veins really present and overall it just has excellent construction from cap to foot.

The Start: I began to smell the foot and wrapper and they both have the same aroma of a sweet yet mild barnyard. From that alone I can tell this is going to be a nice and rich cigar. I gave the pointed cap a straight cut even though this would also go good with a v-cut. The pre-draw has a flavor of sweet tobacco and the draw itself required effort obviously due to the pointed foot. As for the initial draw it was a really rich and creamy cocoa which can also be described as a milk chocolate.

The Beginning: To start off the first section of the O.S.O.K it has a main flavor profile of a smooth pink pepper spice that combines perfectly with the milk chocolate from the initial draw. On the back burner are tones of a dry wood that makes the smoke nice and cooling on the palate. I’m really loving the profile on this cigar right now! It’s just an overall rich smoke that has alot of flavor packed into each puff. The ash is a peppered mix color that is nice and firm. As for the burn it’s wavy to begin with but, after it moved past the foot it evens out a lot; only now it has a very small wave. The draw still requires some effort but after you move past the foot farther into the first third it opens up quite a bit more. Also when getting past the foot a flavor of a rich wheat begins to appear that makes a nice full smoke. I’m loving this smoke!

The Middle: As I move into the second third the flavors and smoke just kept becoming more and more creamy. It’s wonderful! I also picked up a small hint of anise and some sort of milk, like an eggnog, but not quite. Can’t seem to put my finger on it though. Maybe a RumChata? The profile for the most part is still keeping what is was before with the milk chocolate, pink pepper, and the smokey wood along with the hints of other flavors here and there. These flavors start to become alot richer after moving past the halfway point when the cigar begins to narrow again. The burn here is almost nearly perfect and the draw keeps becoming easier as more time passes. The ash was still remaining firm and was now transitioning to all white with a little bit of grey. At this point in the O.S.O.K the smoke is very smooth and creamy which makes the palate water like a good dessert!

The End: It’s sad to say that this cigar is coming to an end because now I am into the last third of the Room101 One Shot One Kill. I just didn’t want it to end. The profile is still remaining consistent and rich all the way. One of the only things that changed in this part of the cigar is that a toasted almond came into play which further complimented the overall flavor profile. This baby, I smoked all the way to the nub. It was that creamy and smooth. The finish consisted of a mild spice along with a creamy and smokey wood.

Final Thoughts: All in all this cigar took me about an hour and 15 minutes and it was simply amazing being packed with so much creamy flavor it felt like I just had a meal. My biggest suggestion with this stick is to just have a water to truly enjoy all the flavors. I have also smoked the larger size which is called the Trucha. That one took me about two to two and half hours. It’s flavor was still the same as this little guy but if your looking for a longer smoke of the One Shot One Kill I suggest that but if your looking for a lot more flavor then stick with the Filero. I just can’t keep stating how much I enjoy this stick. Matt Booth along with Edgar Hoill did it on this one, from the cigar to the way it was presented, all of it was just spot on. If you haven’t really heard of Room101 I suggest you check out their other sticks too because Matt is doing a great job these days on the lines he has been releasing from the Room101 Connecticut 615c to the Room101 LTD Namakubi Papi Chulo. Happy smoking people and don’t over look this one, go out and give it a try!

Pre-Production Viaje Honey and Hand Grenades

Today we bring you a review of the Pre-Production Viaje Honey and Hand Grenades. This was given to us by Andre Farkas last spring, 2011. Only ten were handed out by him. This cigar is scheduled to be released this year and to be based off the Exclusivo blend. Will this be the next cigar from Viaje to rule them all? Will it be the next Viaje Oro Reserva VOR No. 5? Or just another excellent stick from Viaje? The name itself sounds pretty bad ass and unique, Honey and Hand Grenades. We won’t really know till it’s out on the market. Anyways enough of the talk lets dive into this review!

The Look: The shape of the Honey and Hand Grenades is very unique. If I’m correct this shape is going to be the first of it’s kind in the cigar industry. It consists of a rounded cap and a torpedo like foot. The size is similar to a Corona. The cap by the looks of it is triple capped and the wrapper is put on very smooth from head to foot. The wrapper has a light amount of veins and the pack is very firm with virtually no give. Lastly, the band has a glued on H & HG standing for Honey and Hand Grenades and has brass knuckles underneath it.

The Start: After inspecting the cigar I move to the pre-light aromas. The wrapper had light scents of manure and cedar, nothing too strong. As for the foot it also had a light smell of manure nothing too strong or anything, just average. Moving on to the pre-light draw it took some effort to draw and only had a small amount of sweetness. I couldn’t really pin point it to anything though. Now to begin the light up. Immediately received a strong red pepper spice that gave the tongue a good tickle and made the palate moist. It also had a dark, rich earth flavor.

The Beginning: The first third starts with the red pepper again which you can really feel on the tongue giving it a prickly feeling. As for the draw it becomes easier the farther you move into the torpedo foot. Sounds kind of weird saying torpedo foot. Making my way through the foot I picked up notes of a really dark flavor like a dark roast coffee. When letting the cigar sit it produces little wisps of smoke continuously and as for each draw they produce a great amount of voluminous white smoke that warms the mouth. Now once I get passed the torpedo foot the spice begins to smooth out and the dark flavors begin to come on more than before. The burn here is a little wavy but nothing too concerning. Pretty confident it should smooth out later because it probably waved out due to the torpedo foot light. I’m also really enjoying how it feels in the hand and mouth, good natural feel with the right amount of weight to it. Getting closer to the second third the flavor profile begins to change starting with a bitterness rising up and a tiny amount of burnt caramelized maple wood. With the aroma being of a sweet wood. Also by the start of the second third the burn evens out and the ash that is a mix of white, grey, and black stays firm up til this point.

The Middle: Now making my way into the second third the smoke begins to become more creamy adding more of that sweetness of a semi burnt maple wood. The spice isn’t completely gone thought it’s now more on the back burner to say the least. The profile transition so far has just been great; starting with the dark beginning and now entering the sweet middle. The draw at this point has become very smooth and producing more voluminous amounts of smoke. The burn also has improved just like the draw becoming almost razor sharp. Another plus with this cigar too is that you can let it rest for quite some time without it going out which is due to the smaller ring gauge. Now just before going into the last third I noticed a hint of manure which I’m saying I could have been picking up from the aroma itself.

The End: Lastly, I begin the final third of the Honey and Hand Grenades. The peak of the sweet and creaminess is right here and then it slowly begins to retract. The spice begins it’s ascend back up with it starting to tickle the tongue again. Along with the spice comes the bitterness again. It transforms into more of a barnyard type musk. For example when you go into an old barn and it gives off an old wet smell. The burn is still going steady and same with the ash. Getting farther into the last third the smoke begins to dry out more and inducing a very small amount of almond flavor and a bitter anise flavor on the finish but, still overall keeping that pleasant musky spice. I gave it a retro haul here and experienced a heavy amount of spice that made me tear up a bit. Then as for the finish it consisted of red pepper with an after taste of the musky barnyard wood.

Final Thoughts: Once all is said and done this smoke took me about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The Viaje Honey and Hand Grenades was superb! I was able to smoke it down to the nub without any complaints. I’m very excited for when this hits the market. It has a bad ass name and I especially love the new shape that Viaje tried to do here with a mix between your standard Parejo and Figurado. Hopefully this won’t be the last of this kind of shape because others in the industry could benefit from this idea and maybe even take it further. The Viaje Honey and Hand Grenades provides an excellent journey that any aficionado or beginner would be happy with. I look forward to when this is out and others can enjoy it just as much as I did. Joya De Nicaragua Antaño Dark Corojo Peligroso

Flavors/Notes: Hint of creamy chocolate, and spice. Finishes with a flavorful dark chocolate. Retrohaling brings out strong spice; clears out the sinuses.
Ash: Flaky and very light gray almost white
Draw: Easy draw that produces volumous amount of smoke
Burn: mostly even burn
Appearance: Small specked dark spots and larger darkly shaded areas on a dark amber back ground with some dark veins.
Other Comments: This cigar is very a enjoyable flavorful robust smoke with a pretty consistent flavor profile.

Panacea Green Broadleaf

The Panacea Green Label uses a Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper and the filler is a triple ligero so from that I can tell this cigar is going to pack some punch! The leaves they use for this cigar are fermented in Bucks Country, PA. Here is more information on the company itself if you would like to know –> Flatbed Cigar Company. The wrapper on this cigar is a chocolate brown with peppered dark spots and some thick veins running up and down the length of the cigar. It also has a clean cap and an oily sheen to it.

The foot and wrapper to the Green had a strong smell of spice to it. As for the pre-light draw it really had no flavor to it and the draw itself took pretty much no effort, very smooth. Which kind of made no sense because this is a triple ligero.  The initial draw was a different story though. It had a mild tobacco as the base flavor and prominent leather as the main flavor. The draw really required little to no effort still and when resting in an ashtray it produced a decent amount of smoke.

Going through the first third each draw produced a good amount of smoke and the strength in flavors begin to ramp up and tingle the tongue. A spice is introduced during the first third that is really strong when retro hauling. Also I begin to pick up a lite amount of vanilla bean along with the main leather flavor, which I can tell is on the up rise. The ash on this stick is for the most part black, firm, and stays on for quite some time.

The second third is where you really notice changes. The smoke here begins to become alot more creamy with the vanilla becoming alot more noticeable and the leather smoothing out along with it aswell.  Only down part here is I needed to correct the burn because it became really jagged. Overall I’m really enjoying this stick, it has an excellent blend of spice, vanilla, and leather that makes for a very creamy smoke. Plus I think this is the first time I’ve ever had Pennsylvania Broadleaf as a wrapper on a cigar…usually not that common and also stating what I stated before it’s made in the US which is another plus. This cigar would also compliment a nice, rich coffee.

Approaching the final third the vanilla is taking on a small amount of bitterness, which is a sign it’s starting to die down. While going making my way threw the final the vanilla continued to go down in exchange for the spice which was going up. The leather still remained the main flavor though. The burn was still up and down but, didn’t get to the point where it needed corrections again. As for the finish it was leather follow by spice. In total the Panacea Green Broadleaf was an excellent smoke especially those out there that are looking for a strong smoke that will give about and hour and a half of enjoyment.
